Bringing Baby Home

Bringing Baby Home - Gottman Trained EducatorEven the strongest relationships are strained during the transition to parenthood. Lack of sleep, seemingly unending housework, new financial concerns, and reshuffled priorities can lead to profound stress and a decline in marital satisfaction, all of which ultimately affect baby's care. Not surprisingly, 69% of new parents report experiencing conflict, disappointment, and hurt feelings following the birth of their baby. Research-based Bringing Baby Home workshops prepare couples for life with baby and help them to be the best parenting team possible. In a relaxed and supportive environment, parents learn to strengthen their relationship and foster their baby's development during this challenging time.

The program combines scientific research and public education to improve the quality of life for babies and children by strengthening their families. It teaches new parents how to gain relationship satisfaction and create healthy social, emotional, and intellectual development for their children. It builds on what Dr. John Gottman and his colleagues found is the best predictor of marital adjustment after the baby arrives-the quality of friendship in the marriage.

Couples gain a sense of empowerment by learning new skills to:

  • Prepare for the transition to parenthood
  • Stay connected with their partner, thereby maintaining relationship satisfaction
    after having a baby
  • Strengthen their friendship, intimacy, and conflict resolution skills
  • Promote positive parent-baby interactions
  • Promote quality involvement with baby for both parents
  • Reduce the incidence or severity of Postpartum Mood Disorders

While I am not offering workshops or classes as a stand-alone series at the current time, my training and designation as a Gottman Bringing Baby Home Educator allows me to bring these important concepts and skills into my therapeutic work with women and couples in the transition to becoming new parents.
